About this book

Peace cannot be taken for granted, nor can it be decreed. This is amply demonstrated by today’s world. Peace decided by one of the parties in conflict to the detriment of the other is not peace, but an act of domina-tion by force based on the exclusion of the reasons that lead the other to express disagreement or opposition. The problem is therefore to determine how one and the other can come to an agreement. This presupposes an un-derstanding on the part of each party of what the other is, according to his or her own particular identity. The temptation in conflict is always to demonize the adversary and exclude him or her from the ecumene. The latter is then presented, by the authorities and the media, in the darkest terms. He is said to be a manifesta-tion of evil, justifying his destruction. This passionate vision needs no ba-sis in reality. In fact, it’s all the easier to get people to accept it when they can rely on a deeper ignorance of who the other is, their concerns, their in-tentions, their state of mind, their reasons for acting as they do. It’s a ques-tion of justifying the action taken against him, not understanding him as he is. The question of peace, then, is how to prevent such outbursts of fu-ry as far as possible, and limit their consequences. In other words, how can we promote a culture of peace?
